Greeting from JSSI President

Akinobu Nakazawa
President, the Japan Society of Seismic Isolation (JSSI)

I was appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors at the General Assembly held on June 8, 2022. I will do to devote myself to the development of The Japan Society of Seismic Isolation and look forward to the further cooperation of our members. Currently, seismically isolated structures are used not only in government buildings and hospitals, but also in a wide range of applications such as condominiums, offices, and logistics warehouse. Seismic isolation structures are also used in buildings with a height of around 200 m, which are realm of vibration-controlled structures in terms of scale. This is proof of the high performance of seismic isolation devices, and of the extremely high level of design technology, construction technology, and subsequent maintenance management. Last year, JSSI marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the association and the 100th anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake. JSSI is planning to hold events, and we would appreciate your cooperation.

Profile

The Japan Society of Seismic Isolation was established in 1993 with the primary aim of promoting seismic isolation, thereby contributing to the construction of safer and higher quality buildings, resulting in a more prosperous society.

30 years history of the JSSI
JSSI was established in 1993. Prior to its establishment, many companies had been involved in seismic isolation
structures in the Japanese building field, and worked to establish an association and popularize seismic isolation structural technology. Since 2000, it has also been involved in vibration control structural technology, and has become a national designated performance evaluation organization. JSSI has many committees that are very active, and it also engages in international exchange.

Objectives

Promotion of investigations and researches on seismic isolation for buildings
Disseminating the proper usage of seismic isolation and improve seismic isolation technology
Exchanging information about seismic isolation in partnership‚ with organizations of other countries
Contribution to the development and improvement of reliable seismic-resistant technology based on standards for safe and quality buildings
Contribution to safe living environments and advance the interests of the society

Board

27 directors and 3auditors President is selected by directors, and executive director is as well. Directors and auditors are selected by the steering committee of JSSI. Thirteen directors are from academics, six directors from construction companies, three from design firms and three from manufacturers. One auditor is from academics, one from design firms and one from manufacturers.

About Assosiation Logo Design

【Catfish illustration of the JSSI logo】 Catfish are carnivorous freshwater fish that inhabit rivers and lakes in East Asia, such as Japan and China. In Japan, it has been widely popular because of its distinctive appearance. In addition, the relationship between catfish and earthquakes has long been believed among the general public, such as "the ground shakes when a giant catfish gets angry underground. Especially during the Edo period, when the heavily populated Edo (present-day Tokyo) was hit by a major earthquake, this belief about the relationship between catfish and earthquakes became even more widespread.
The JSSI objective is to contribute to the development of safe and high-quality buildings through the development and diffusion of seismic isolation technology by taking a serious look at the natural phenomenon of earthquakes, and has chosen the catfish as the symbol of the JSSI as a friendly reminder.
